Understanding a Data File's Context
Agencies of the U.S. Federal Government created the series
and data files presented in AAD
to address their specific business needs, some of which still exist, and
some of which are now defunct. NARA has prepared series and data file descriptions
and, in some cases, scanned documentation
packages to help you better understand the context
in which the records in AAD were created and used. Knowing this background
can often help you interpret the data.
-
Series and file unit descriptions. NARA's archivists have prepared descriptions
of the series and file units. The descriptions include narrative summaries
of the scope and content
of the records, function and
use of the records by the creating organizations, coverage and creation
(i.e., inclusive) dates, and many other descriptive elements.
-
Documentation Packages.
In some cases NARA has included online copies of selected portions
of series and data file documentation packages under the link "View Scanned Documentation."
Documentation packages can give you background information about the
purpose and use of the records, technical specifications, and code lists
that give the meaning of coded values.
You may find it helpful to print out the documentation and review
it before starting a search. If you want to see the complete documentation
package, you may view it in person at the National
Archives at College Park. See ordering
information for electronic records for further information or contact
us.
