NEW 2002 Estimates: EIA has revised its State-level estimates of 2002 coal production to match 2002 final MSHA data. The revised 2002 estimates are entered in the December monthly table at the sixth bullet below. The 2002 spreadsheets at hyperlinks: Weekly Revised Estimates and Monthly Revised Estimates below, also have the revised estimates. For 2002, the final revised estimate of U.S. coal production is 1.094 billion short tons.

At the first bullet below, tables containing original estimates for the current week can be downloaded. At the second bullet below, EIA provides a spreadsheet, containing ORIGINAL WEEKLY estimates for all weeks starting with the first week in 2002. At the third bullet below, EIA provides a spreadsheet, containing ORIGINAL MONTHLY estimates for all months starting with January 2002.

Weekly Coal Production

Users are encouraged to investigate the web pages where EIA has placed weekly and monthly revised estimates. By clicking on the "revised" hyperlinks below, users can access EIA's revised weekly and monthly estimates from 1984 forward.

As discussed on the "revised" web pages, EIA revises its first-round weekly estimates of State-level coal production using Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) quarterly coal production data. After revision, EIA's State-level weekly numbers summed for the quarter match the MSHA data. In 2001, MSHA discovered that some mines were not reporting clean coal tons, rather they were including some tons of non-coal refuse material. The inclusion of non-coal refuse material does not meet MSHA's request for only clean coal production. MSHA contacted all refuse mines to determine which ones were reporting clean coal and which were not. The mines that were not reporting clean coal tons were asked to submit adjusted production numbers for 2001 and in the future to only report clean tons as required. With this change, anthracite production in Pennsylvania is being reported by MSHA at about one-third the level reported previously because a large percentage of Pennsylvania anthracite is recovered from culm banks containing significant amounts of non-coal material, but only the clean coal tons are recorded by MSHA. To bring its estimates into line with MSHA data, EIA has adjusted model factors applied to estimate Pennsylvania anthracite weekly production. Consequently, users will see about a 65 percent reduction in the weekly estimates of Pennsylvania anthracite in EIA's weekly tables compared to previous estimates.
