Domestic Uranium Production Report

2003 Summary

The U.S. uranium production industry's decline continued through 2003. Total U.S. uranium mining, concentrate production, and employment are near historical lows. During 2003, an estimated 2.2 million pounds U3O8 of uranium was mined in the United States, 9 percent less than mine production in 2002. Mine production of uranium came mostly from in-situ leaching. Overall, there were two commercially operating uranium in-situ leach mines and one underground mine during part or all of 2003. U.S. uranium concentrate production in 2003 was estimated at 2.0 million pounds U3O8, 15 percent below the 2002 level. Shipments of uranium concentrate from domestic production facilities were estimated at 1.6 million pounds in 2003. Employment in the U.S. uranium raw materials industry totaled 321 person-years in 2003, a decrease of 25 percent from the 2002 level. Employment in production (exploration, mining, milling and processing) of uranium decreased 26 percent from 2002. Wyoming accounted for about 42 percent of the total employment.
