  • Q. Should the MTBE output stream include the MTBE component as well as the TAME and TBA components? What about DME? (7/27/2004)
  • A. Yes. In other words, report the entire volume as MTBE. This assumes that the whole volume will be treated and used as MTBE when received, input, and inventoried at refineries and terminals. EIA tries to maintain a rough balance between MTBE supply (production and imports) and MTBE disposition (stock change, inputs, and exports). Refiners and terminals typically treat the entire product stream as MTBE for disposition purposes, so the supply from production also should include the entire stream.
The DME stream is a little bit different in that it is not a part of the MTBE stream but rather is included in C4 raffinate and will not ultimately be part of MTBE disposition reported on other surveys by refiners and terminal operators. Therefore, the DME should not be reported as part of MTBE production because this would give us supply of MTBE in excess of disposition.
