Aerial photos of the same location after Hurricanes
Bertha (1996), Fran (1996) and Bonnie (1998) showing repetitive erosion at Topsail Island, NC. |
The USGS acquires video and still photography to supplement the laser altimetry measurements of
the coast. The photography is used for recognizing geomorphic features impacted by storms and to
document cultural features not easily recognizable in the topographic data. This USGS aerial
photography has been georeferenced, so that photo locations can be plotted. Latitude/longitude
coordinates from a Global Positioning System (GPS) are merged onto the video data to provide a
constant location guide. The 35-mm still photography is registered to the digital video data by a
time stamp.
The compact digital video/GPS system is quite adaptable. The system has been flown on the
NOAA Twin Otter, the Coast Guard
H60 and
H65 helicopters, and commercial King Air and
Cessna aircraft. The photography is acquired both pre-storm and post-storm to help understand the
relative changes that shape the coastal environment.
