Nine agencies within the U.S. Department of Transportation are working together to promote and implement a safer national transportation system by combining the best injury prevention practices into the Safe Communities approach to serve as a model throughout the nation.
The USDOT established the Safe Communities Service Center to serve as an information and technical assistance marketplace to advance Safe Communities nationwide. The Center provides one-stop shopping for local community needs for materials and resources related to building and strengthening Safe Communities. With thousands of people killed and millions more injured nationwide in traffic crashes every year, the Safe Communities approach has been proven to assist communities in reducing the all too frequent occurrence and unwarranted, wasteful costs of transportation related injuries.  Safe Communities: The First Six Months This guide is designed for concerned individuals and community groups who are committed to reducing the motor vehicle injury problem in their community. We have learned a great deal from traffic safety advocates and public health officials about reducing motor vehicle injury in the last twenty years. This guide is intended to serve to help get the process started and assist you in organizing the effort to prevent and reduce injuries in your community. NHTSA provides technical assistance and some logistic support to states that wish to conduct independent, objective assessments of elements of their highway safety programs, to identify program strengths and weaknesses and plan effectively for program improvement. Building Safe Communities Newsletters With the vision for the future of every community in America becoming a Safe Community, this guide lists ideas, activities and programs in each major area of traffic safety for use by local injury prevention coalitions.
