Mary Pickford Theater

Since publishing a new calendar last July, the Pickford Theater has acquired funding for three new series, allowing us more nights of programming. Movies and the Moral Life (September 15, October 7, November 10, and December 9 and 10) will be hosted by Jean Bethke Elshtain, Professor of Social and Political Ethics at The University of Chicago. Prof. Elshtain will both provide an introduction to and lead a discussion of the moral and ethical themes portrayed in a number of classic American movies. A nine evening series in conjunction with the Library exhibition Haven to Home: 350 Years of the Jewish Experience in America, begins September 13, while a six night tribute to director Fernando de Fuentes opens October 20 with 35mm prints borrowed from the Filmoteca de la UNAM in Mexico City. Continuing are the programs accompanying the Library exhibition With an Even Hand: Brown v. Board at Fifty, while starting in October we’ll devote ten nights to jazz and soul television performances in a series co-sponsored with the Music Division. Scattered throughout are more National Film Registry nomination screenings, 60s British mods, femme fatales, and a lot more music.
