Wisconsin Firm Awarded $2 Million for Hydrogen Research
Acting Under Secretary of Energy David K. Garman announced on October 14th that DOE has awarded $1,942,739 to Virent Energy Systems, LLC, of Madison, Wisconsin, for research in support of the President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative. Virent will develop a one-step process for converting biomass-derived liquids, such as glycerol, into hydrogen. While today's systems convert such liquids into a gas, send the gas through a high-temperature "reformer" to convert it into a hydrogen-rich mixture of gases, and then separate the hydrogen from the other gases, the Virent system generates high-purity hydrogen gas directly from biomass liquids. The process could be used to generate hydrogen from glycerol at existing gasoline stations, thereby eliminating the need for a substantial hydrogen transport and delivery infrastructure. See the DOE press release and the Virent Web site.
