GSA
Mail Management Biological Threats and Irradiation

We can never predict how or when a terrorist attack using biological agents might occur, but we do know that the threat is real. The purpose of this information is to provide an overview and quick reference for assessing and managing biological threats in federal mail centers. It is not intended as a definitive text on the medical management of biological agents. The information was developed by an interagency working group.

To safeguard the health and security of federal employees, GSA has developed guidelines for opening irradiated mail in close coordination with members of the Legislative Mail Task Force on irradiated mail.  GSA offers these guidelines as general safety and security procedures for opening incoming mail that has been irradiated. These guidelines are intended as guidance for those federal employees who open mail as part of their responsibilities.

The report and information can be accessed under the library.
