About DAWN

DAWN is a national surveillance system that monitors trends in drug-related emergency department visits and deaths.

DAWN is operated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA is required to collect data for DAWN under Section 505 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 290aa-4).
