Beyond the Beginning: The Future of Genomics II

Airlie Conference Center

Warrenton, Va.
November 18-20, 2002

On November 18-20, 2002, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) gathered more than 150 genome researchers at the Airlie Conference Center in Warrenton, Va. to help figure out where NHGRI should focus its efforts after finishing the human sequence in 2003.

Beyond the Beginning: The Future of Genomics II concluded a yearlong NHGRI planning process, the scope of which was framed at the first Airlie planning meeting held in December 2001. Many of the issues raised at this meeting -- Beyond the Beginning: The Future of Genomics -- were explored in depth in a subsequent series of workshops over the past year that developed recommendations about different aspects of the institute's mission. The results of this process -- outlined in a document entitled "Visions for Genomics Research" -- will be the focal point of the discussion at Airlie II.

Because many more people wanted to come to Airlie II than could be accommodated, the institute videotaped the plenary sessions and the reports from the breakout sessions. They are available for viewing on the Internet.
