Description: Get your hands dirty and learn how to build sustainable and fun singletrack. The school includes three hours of classroom instruction followed by hands-on-time in the field learning trail building techniques. Topics include designing a contour trail, controlling water flow, building effective trail structures, and routine trail maintenance. Field work will be hands-on, so come prepared. Long pants and a long sleeved shirt are recommended. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, snacks, work gloves, sunscreen, and a hat. Description: If you have ever thought about volunteering in a state park, this is an excellent opportunity for groups and individuals to pledge to "Lend a Hand" in the real Florida! Projects will include a beach and mangrove cleanup in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, Make a Difference Day, and the State of Florida's Take Pride in Florida program. There will also be a nature trail cleanup, native planting and the opportunity to get involved with our volunteer program. Participants should bring sunscreen, bugspray, work gloves, and a love of nature. A light breakfast will be provided. Ability to work outside and some walking is required. Description: Talbot Islands State Parks is seeking volunteers to help our Rangers with hurricane clean up. Storm debris and trash need to be collected around park facilites, and along the shores of Amelia Island, Big Talbot, and Little Talbot Island State Parks. We welcome individuals and large groups of all ages. We will provide trash bags, rakes, and other supplies and tools. Description: Monthly we have a beginning birder walk on the Pepper Creek Trail. Due to the large volume of debris left after hurricane Frances we have been unable to clear some of the side trails that we use for the monthly event. Most of the debris is small (less than 10 pounds) and will only require particpants to wear gloves, bug repellent and be able to withstand outside weather conditions in Florida.

Description: Myakka River State Park was impacted by three of the four hurricanes that hit Florida this summer. Although we were lucky, in comparison to most of the state, we had damage to our trails and back country campsites. Volunteers will be working to clear these areas of downed trees and make them available for use by park visitors. The specific activities will include clearing downed brush, moving limbs, etc. Volunteers should wear sturdy, close toed shoes and bring drinking water and gloves. Mosquitto spray is also recommended.

Description: Cleanup to remove debris from the Cherokee Sink Unit of the Wakulla Springs State Park. As many as ten certified adult divers needed to remove items from as deep as 70 feet below the surface of the water of the sink, and as many as 15 adult volunteers to carry items to nearby truck. Divers to supply their own SCUBA gear. Volunteers should wear sturdy clothes and shoes suitable for wading in the water. Event sponsored by the Down Under Diver Center & Florida Park Service.

Description: On a date to be announced over the next month, park staff and volunteers will restore a trail that loops through wetland, upland pines, and a ravine forest that contains plant species such as violets, trillium and rattlesnake fern. We will rebuild and elevate a boardwalk that traverses the small creek and wetland area. To restore a steep section of trail that has eroded, we will sculpt a bench cut, install posts and a handrail, and then plant ground cover to prevent erosion. Field work will be hands-on. Long pants and a long sleeved shirt are recommended, along with sturdy shoes, gloves, sunscreen, and a hat. Also, if you have a hammer, shovel, rake, pick, etc., please bring them along. Description: Visitors to the Mississippi River Visitor Center can meet the Superintendent of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area JoAnn Kyral. Kids can earn their National Park Service Junior Ranger badges at this event and be “sworn in” by Superintendent Kyral. Children will participate in hands-on activities about river birds, disappearing waterfalls, and Mississippi mussels in order to earn their badges. Families can also get their picture taken with Superintendent Kyral and ask her questions about what it's like to work in national parks, and learn how to become a Park Ranger. Freddie the Flathead Catfish will also be attending and sharing information about fun activities you can do along the Mississippi River through the Mighty Mississippi Passport Program. Volunteers staff activity stations available for children to earn the Junior Park Ranger badges. Other volunteers are needed to become Freddie the Flathead Catfish- the park mascot! Physical activity is low. Volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt as part of their uniform. Water and parking is provided!

Description: Walk on a beautiful beach - and help keep Anastasia State Park pristine! Fill out your volunteer form at the ranger station and ask for your trash bag(s) and gloves. Then tootle on out to the Northern Beach! Get some sun and help pick up the trash our recent hurricanes washed up. You may bring trash bags back to the park dumpster at Island Joes (by the beach) or you may leave trash bags on the beach if they are to heavy (or numerous) to carry. Let a ranger know and we'll pick them up. Beach cleanup conditions may be hot, humid, windy, cool, rainy, sandy, dirty, or wet. Terrain may be uneven or soft sand. No shade. No driving or pets on beach. No lifeguards on beach. Avoid being out during thunderstorms. Remember - you need to be able to walk back, too! Wear approprite clothing and shoes. Most of all, have fun.
