Date reviewed: 08/27/2004 Donations to the National Cancer InstituteThe National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a Federal Government research agency funded by congressional appropriations. We do not solicit funds or participate in fund-raising activities. A number of private cancer organizations operate locally and nationally in the United States, and many of them have similar names. Some of these may suggest NCI or the NCI’s Cancer Information Service as a source of information on cancer. However, none of these organizations is affiliated with the NCI. NCI does accept donations to support cancer research. If the donation is made in memory or honor of another person and the friend’s or family’s address is provided, NCI will acknowledge receipt of the gift. Dollar amounts are not included in the letter of acknowledgement. Donation checks should be made payable to the National Cancer Institute and sent to National Cancer Institute, Building 31, Room 11A16, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20892; the telephone number for donation inquiries is 301–496–5803. Donations are deposited in NCI’s Gift Fund and are used to advance the Institute’s programs. Projects supported through the Gift Fund vary from year to year depending on the needs of the Institute. Projects that have been supported through the Gift Fund include special fellowships to train young scientists in cancer research, equipment for clinical laboratories, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center’s “Patient Emergency Fund,” which is used to assist patients in financial need (donations can also be made directly to the NIH Clinical Center for this purpose), workshops and conferences on subjects of special importance to cancer research, and printing of pamphlets about cancer for the general public.
