Pesticides and Food:
What the Pesticide Residue Limits are on Food

Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire

EPA sets limits on how much of a pesticide residue can remain on food. These pesticide residue limits are known as tolerances. Tolerances are set to protect you from harmful levels of pesticides on your food. Inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration Exit EPA disclaimer and the United States Department of Agriculture Exit EPA disclaimer monitor food in interstate commerce to ensure that these limits are not exceeded.

The tolerance database previously offered on this page is being reviewed and updated. In the interim, you may search for tolerance information through the on-line version of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The tolerance information is found within 40 CFR 180, as published July 1, 2004. Exit EPA disclaimer For information on new tolerances or changes to tolerances since July 1, search EPA's Federal Register site.

For more information on specific chemicals:

  • Registration and Chemical-Specific Information - Through this page, EPA has numerous documents providing detailed information about pesticides, such as their toxicity, use patterns, and registration status. However, not all pesticides are currently featured on the Web site.
  • Search EPA's Pesticides Web site for documents addressing a specific pesticide.  This allows you to identify any document that may include a discussion or mention of that chemical.
  • Extoxnet - a Web site designed to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about exposure to toxicants in our environment. The Web site provides various types of pesticide toxicology and environmental chemistry information (e.g., pesticide profiles, fact sheets, information briefs, newsletters, etc.)  Exit EPA disclaimer
