 Environmental Research

A special goal of the Environmental Program is to develop workable solutions for those industry activities that could adversely affect environmental resources.

Environmental Sciences - provides technical information from innovative research to elucidate complex environmental processes and provides analyses for NEPA and OCSLA reports, and proposed legislation and regulations that may affect OCS activities. Estimation of the oil-spill risks associated with offshore production, addressing the likelihood of spill occurrence, the transport and fate of spilled oil.
Environmental Studies - goals are to obtain the information needed for the assessment and the management of environmental impacts; predicting impacts on the marine biota that may result from chronic, low-level pollution or large spills; and monitoring human, marine, and coastal environments to provide time series and data trend information.
Oil Spill Modeling Program - assessing oil-spill risks associated with U.S. offshore energy activities and calculating spill trajectories and contact probabilities.
ESPIS - completed study reports available on-line.
Scientific Advisory Committee - providing advice on the feasibility, appropriateness, and scientific value of the MMS's OCS Environmental Studies Program (ESP).

Environmental Compliance - describes legal requirements, environmental policies and procedures that apply to the OCS Oil and Gas Program.
Sand and Gravel - integrates geologic and environmental information developed through partnerships with coastal States and contracted out or with cooperative study efforts, to identify suitable OCS sand deposits and to provide needed environmental information in regards to environmental management of these resources.
Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R;) - supports research associated with operational safety and pollution prevention as well as oil spill response and cleanup capabilities.
Oil Spill Response Research - provides research leadership to improve the capabilities for detecting and responding to an oil spill in the marine environment.
