Throughout its history, the National Science Foundation has had a tremendous impact on our nation. We can say with confidence that because of NSF, our food is safer, our health care advanced, our communications are global and our knowledge base is richer. More than ever before, advances in science, engineering, education, and technological innovation are keys to our future. They are the best hope we have for raising people's prospects for combating poverty, hunger, and disease and for sustaining a secure and healthy environment. NSF touches almost every part of people's lives. Working at NSF is an opportunity to contribute to this important vision.

For NSF to be most effective, each of you must have the chance to pursue life-long learning and we are making sure that our staff is at the cutting edge of the nation's workforce by fostering a learning culture consistent with the agency's strategic goals. The newly-established NSF Academy will provide opportunities for you to learn new skills in technology and business practices and to enhance career development. We hope that this on-line orientation will be the first step in an exciting, on-going learning process for you at NSF.

The information that follows provides an overview of the agency's mission, strategic plan, and the outcome goals that NSF pursues in fulfilling its historic mission through investments in "People, Ideas and Tools," as well as a perspective on the unique contributions of each NSF directorate and office.

You have joined a Federal agency with a deep commitment to investing in our nation's future. We look forward to working with you.
