Healthy StartThe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Education are collaborating in a new pilot program entitled, Healthy Start, Grow Smart. Healthy Start, Grow Smart is a 13 pamphlet series on infant health care and child development, one for the newborn and then one for each of the first 12 months of the new infants life. The pamphlets are being provided to mothers who are receiving Medicaid benefits when their babies are born. These booklets are intended to improve early childhood education for America's youngest children by providing understandable information to parents and caregivers about the best practices in early childhood development. The program is adapted from a magazine series Take Time for Kids that was published by the Texas Department of Health in 2000. In October, sets of the first 6 pamphlets were mailed to many hospitals nationally for distribution to new mothers. As the budget allows, additional booklets will be mailed to hospitals and states.
