Erwin Knoll was born on July 17, 1931, in Vienna, Austria. He was a reporter and "free lance" writer for the Capitol Times of Madison, Wisconsin. On August 29, 1968, while covering the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, he was arrested for disorderly conduct for crossing the police lines. Arrested with him were about 20 demonstrators and Tom Buckley of the New York Times newspaper. On October 4, 1968, the Assistant United States Attorney declined prosecution.
