William Harrison Dempsey, also known as Jack Dempsey was a well-known boxer who held the title of Heavy Weight Champion. After leaving the ring, he opened a restaurant in New York City. Jack Dempsey raised money for needy causes over the next several years. On March 6, 1936, Jack Dempsey received a letter threatening to kidnap his 19-month-old daughter, Joan Hannah. He and his family were vacationing in Atlantic City at the time. Mrs. Dempsey was expecting the couples second child. The family returned to New York City under heavy guard. On August 26, 1936, the Dempsey's became parents of a second daughter, Barbara Judith. On May 26, 1939, Dempsey received an Extortion letter, threatening to blow up his restaurant.
