Crime Mapping

Crime mapping provides law enforcement agencies with a powerful tool to aid in crime control and crime prevention efforts. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) create digital representations that enable users to examine data analytically, not just visually. GIS can help law enforcement agencies identify crime “hot spots” upon which to focus limited resources. More importantly, crime mapping can help law enforcement identify the underlying conditions that give rise to crime problems, as well as assess the effectiveness of responses to those problems.

The COPS Office has supported crime mapping efforts by funding crime mapping software and hardware through the COPS MORE grant program and by providing funding to create a Crime Mapping and Problem Analysis Laboratory at the Police Foundation. This laboratory has produced a wide array of products that can help law enforcement use crime mapping to engage in more effective problem-solving efforts. These and other useful publications are available here.
