Project Description: This research will investigate the bioavailability of metals in soils to plants. Standard methods (root elongation and OECD chemical testing methods) will be compared to a recent biotoxicity method (MetPlate). Soils, parent material, plant material and waste rock (for the mining sites) will be studied from agricultural and mining sites. This study will also investigate the bioavailability of different types of metal (Mn, Se, Cu, Zn) organic matter complexes (labile, slowly labile and stable) using fractionation techniques and hydroponics. The affect of the molecular weight of the metal organic matter complexes will also be studied.
