Project Description: The delivery of sediment to coastal regions and its impact on water quality, sensitive habitats, and biological resources are issues of primary importance along the California coast. The proposed research will analyze inner-shelf (<20 m water depth) sediment dynamics following flood discharges from the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz, CA. Using digital photography, video, and marine instruments, we will quantify the distribution and physical characteristics of bed sediments during winter and summer conditions, analyze the magnitude and pathways of suspended sediment transport across the inner shelf, and assess the impact of sediment discharge on inner-shelf benthic communities.
