Future Naval Capabilities (FNCs)

The Office of Naval Research has recently restructured their advanced development efforts into the concept of Future Naval Capability (FNC) demonstrations. The intent of this approach is to demonstrate technology in a manner geared toward ultimate transition to the fleet. Demonstration development is closely coordinated with transition customers to help ensure success.

ONR 334's efforts in hull and mechanical disciplines reside within a single FNC category—Platform Protection. Those efforts are in signature reduction and damage prevention and control. Project areas include topside signature reduction, surface ship and submarine acoustic control, degaussing and deamping, advanced double-hull weapons-protection schemes, ship protection, and automated damage control systems. Electrical disciplines are addressed separately in the "Electric Warships & Combat Vehicles" FNC.
