Health Service Act. A student loan repayment benefit may be offered to
facilitate the recruitment or retention of highly qualified employees. The
amount paid is subject to a maximum limit of $6,000 per employee per
calendar year and a lifetime total of $40,000 per employee and is determined
by the agency. The decision to approve or disapprove a student loan
repayment benefit must be made according to delegations of authority.
For retention purposes a student loan repayment benefit may be paid
provided there is a written determination that the high or unique
qualifications of the employee or special need of the bureau for the
employee’s services makes it essential to retain the employee, and that, in
the absence of offering student loan repayment benefits, the employee would
be likely to leave for employment outside the Federal service.

Alzheimer’s disease). The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program is the
only long term care insurance program sponsored by the Federal Government
for the Federal Family! It reflects the careful efforts of the U.S. Office
of Personnel Management (OPM) and two insurance leaders—John Hancock and
MetLife—to provide comprehensive benefits and group premiums. Some of the
great advantages offered by the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program
include competitive group rates, an expansive home care benefit that
includes informal care, and innovative inflation options.
