REGIONAL  ENERGY  PROFILES

Regional Energy Profiles are series of brief reports and maps about U.S. energy markets and energy consumption issues of current interest. Each series focuses on a different aspect of energy use.

The Data Abstracts series consists of comprehensive reports that present selected, region-specific statistics on energy use by households, household vehicles, commercial buildings, and manufacturing establishments. All Data Abstracts include general information on those aspects of a region's geography, natural resources, economy, agriculture, and industry that are related to energy markets and demand. The series is in progress. Four reports are currently available (see sidebar).

The Residential Energy Maps series is the newest series in the Regional Energy Profiles group. The maps display annual household consumption of natural gas, fuel oil, electricity, and motor gasoline, as well as weather indicators (heating and cooling degree-days and precipitation). Maps of the nine U.S. Census Divisions are now available. Links to the maps and to a list of sources of data used to create them are provided in the sidebar to the left.

The Appliance Report series consists of brief statistical reports in which long-term U.S. trends in market share of air-conditioning units and about two dozen appliances are compared with trends in each U.S. Census Division. The reports, which are the only source of long-term regional data on appliance market shares, were recently updated to present data for selected years from 1980 through 2001. All nine reports are available (see sidebar). The next update is scheduled for 2006, when data for 2005 will be added to the reports.

The Renewable Potential Maps series presents an integrated picture of renewable energy resources in the United States. Solar, geothermal, and wind energy potentials and indicators of hydroelectric and biomass energy potentials (fuelwood harvested, rivers, and precipitation) are presented. The series is complete and all 12 maps are available (see sidebar).
