The Breast and Ovarian Cancer Family Registries* (CFRs) contain information and laboratory specimens contributed by 12,305 families among whom there is a history of breast and/or ovarian cancer. There were 6,225 population-based case families, 2,999 population-based control famlies, and 3,081 clinic-based families enrolled as of July 2004. The CFRs are a valuable resource for conducting important investigations on genetic and environmental susceptibility for these cancers.

Eligible families are invited to join and help quicken the pace of cancer research. Without the many at-risk individuals who participate, it could take years for a researcher to identify enough families and collect the key information needed to begin a study.

Researchers are invited to apply to use the CFRs resources. The resources are to support investigations in genetic epidemiology, including the identification and characterization of genes and gene-gene and gene-environment interactions important to susceptibility for breast and ovarian cancers.

The CFRs also are designed to support clinical investigations, such as on methods to improve prognosis and provide optimal treatment for patients; social and behavioral epidemiology, such as on the choices and behaviors of at-risk groups; and health policy and public health research.

For additional information and to discuss specific applications, contact: Daniela Seminara, Ph.D., M.P.H., Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology Research Branch (CGERB).

* These Registries were formerly called the Cooperative Family Registry for Breast Cancer Studies.
