Highlights:

• In 2002, the marital status among women aged 21 to 49 was as follows: almost 58% were currently married, 20% had never been married, 13% were divorced or separated, 9% were living as married with an unmarried partner, and less than 1% were widowed.

• Based on SAMHSA's 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, among women aged 21 to 49, married women were less likely to have used tobacco, engaged in binge alcohol use, or used an illicit drug in the past month compared with women who were divorced or separated, never married, or living with an unmarried partner.

• Among married women aged 21 to 49, those with children younger than 18 living in the home were less likely to have used tobacco, engaged in binge alcohol use, or used any illicit drug in the past month than those with no child living in the home.

• Past month tobacco and illicit drug use were higher among women living with an unmarried partner than among women from other marital status groups.

This Short Report, The NSDUH Report:  Marital Status and Substance Use Among Women, is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health, formerly called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NHSDA/NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   The NHSDA/NSDUH also provides estimates for drug use by state.
