January 19, 2000 Department of Justice and Immigration and Naturalization Service Attorneys in Miami have filed a federal district court action related to the INS decision regarding Elián González. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) are fully prepared to quickly respond to this action. It is important for the well-being of Elián González that the status of this 6-year-old boy be resolved as quickly as possible. We will therefore ask the court to expeditiously address this matter. Last week INS decided to extend the January 14 date for the reunification of Elián González with his father in order to accommodate federal court action. On January 4, INS determined that Juan González, the father of Elián González, has the sole legal authority to speak for his son on immigration issues. This decision was based on the facts and the law, and recognizes the bond that exists between parent and child. Last week Attorney General Janet Reno reaffirmed her support for the INS decision. In keeping with normal DOJ and INS policy, we will not publicly discuss the specifics of issues pending before the courts. |
