April 10, 2000 DOJ/INS Statement on the Elian Gonzalez Case The meeting between Elians Miami relatives and the three experts in child psychiatry and psychology has concluded. Based on the doctors meeting yesterday with Elians father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, and their meeting today with Elians Miami relatives, the doctors will soon be consulting with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) on the most appropriate way to proceed with Elians reunion with his father. These consultations will serve to inform INS decision on the best way to proceed in reuniting Elian with his father in a way that is the least disruptive to Elian. Subsequently, INS will give instructions to the Miami family on how this transfer will occur. We continue to believe that Elians well being is best served if the Miami relatives participate in an active and responsible way in preparing Elian prior to the transfer, as well as in supporting him during and after he is reunited with his father. Elian and his father, Juan Miguel, have been separated for more than four months. We hope that Elians Miami relatives and everyone involved with this little boy will be supportive of him and his father during this time. INS |
