April 3, 2000 Discussions in Elian Gonzalez Case Discussions will resume at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, regarding how to begin the transfer of care of Elian Gonzalez to his father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez. No final decision has been reached in this matter, but the discussions are continuing in good faith. The scheduled revocation of Elian's parole tomorrow has been superseded by the expected arrival of Juan Miguel Gonzalez in the United States. The Miami relatives have long said they wanted the father to come here. The father has indicated that he wants to be here with his son. Once Mr. Gonzalez arrives, the Immigration and Naturalization Service will begin transferring parole care from Lazaro Gonzalez to the boy's father. The transfer of parole custody does not mean that the child will be immediately removed from the home of his great-uncle. Instead, it is our hope to begin a smooth and orderly process that will create as little disruption as possible for Elian. We wish to add no further trauma to that which this innocent child has already endured. We ask everyone involved who cares about this little boy to work with us to allow these talks to go forward in an orderly and respectful way in an effort to reach a cooperative solution. |
