March 30, 2000 DOJ and INS Statement on the Elian Gonzalez Case The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) have agreed to resume discussions with Lazaro Gonzalez and his legal counsel at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 3. In the meantime, Elians parole status will continue unchanged, and he will be allowed to remain in Lazaro Gonzalez care. Elians parole is therefore extended until 9 am, Tuesday, April 4. All parties are monitoring developments concerning the possible arrival of Juan Miguel Gonzalez in the United States. The Department of Justice and the INS have approached these discussions in good faith, and we hope to continue to move forward on Monday. We continue to urge the community to recognize the importance of the bond between parent and child as well as the need to uphold the laws of the United States. INS |
