DoD Announces September 11 Commemorative Events

The Department of Defense will commemorate the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001 with Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld participating in a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday, Sept. 11, at 9:30 a.m. EDT.  Media interested in covering the ceremony should contact the Military District of Washington public affairs office at (202) 685-4645/3603.

At 11 a.m. EDT, Secretary Rumsfeld, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Richard B. Myers, USAF, and Speaker Dennis Hastert will join Pentagon chaplains and employees in a chapel flag presentation and stained glass window dedication ceremony.  This event will be held in the Pentagon Chapel, Room 1E438, and will be available through DoD pool feed only.  Media can view this event on closed circuit TV in the Pentagon Auditorium, Room 5A1070. Media wishing to visit the attack site or conduct live broadcasts from that location should contact Glenn Flood, (703) 695-6294.

To arrange interviews with Sept. 11 survivors and other individuals in the Pentagon who were directly affected by the attack, media should contact the following military public affairs offices:  Army, (703) 692-2000; Navy, (703) 697-5342; Air Force, (703) 695-0640; and the Marine Corps, (703) 614-4309.

Requests to interview Pentagon police officers and maintenance personnel who conducted rescues and kept the building operating on Sept. 11, 2001, should go to Glenn Flood, (703) 695-6294.

Media representatives without building passes are reminded that they will need two forms of identification to be escorted into the Pentagon.
