Aviation Ratings and Mishap Study

Mech magazine presented a study of PMV and shore-related mishaps in the spring 2004 issue.  These charts provide additional information related to that study.  You'll find the top-ten ratings with the highest number of mishaps (regardless of population) and a consolidated list of all aviation ratings (with population considered).

These charts show a few facts found during a study for a Work-Zone article. The goal was to see if the number of mishap injuries or rates were noticeably higher for any specific ratings. These charts show the ratings and grade levels with the highest propensity for death or injury in PMV or shore-related mishaps. It does NOT take population into consideration and only represents those ratings with the highest number of events. Top-Ten Ratings and Grade Levels Involved in
Private Motor Vehicle Mishaps
(FY94 to 03):

11 of 74 ratings/grades (14.9% of those involved in mishaps—28.5% of total population) account for percentages of PMV mishaps listed in each category above (45.3% overall).

*Added to the list because of a tie for the total.

** Combines ABF, ABH and ABEs.

The following charts used the same approach as the PMV mishaps, but includes data on shore-related mishaps.

Top-Ten Ratings and Grade Levels Involved in
Shore (Recreation, Athletic or Home) Mishaps
(FY94 to 03):

10 of 81 ratings/grades (12.3% of those involved in mishaps—26.5% of the total population) account for the percentages of shore-related mishaps listed in each category above (40.1% overall)..

The list below includes all ratings, with population data, and mishap rates.  (rates are per 100,000 people, per year). Marines are not included in this first study.  As a result of this study, the Naval Safety Center is in the process of reviewing all ratings for similar trends and will look at a similar study by Marine MOS.

As you look at the rates, remember that the average for PMV incidents is 45.93 and for shore it's 69.59.  Our published study disregarded small populations, such as ABHCS with 1 mishap and only 69 people.  We didn't ignore the number; simply didn't show it as a top-ten rating because it would distort the truth (too small a sample).
