Current Mishap Definitions and Reporting Criteria

Mishap Class Total Property Damage Fatality/Injury
A $1,000,000 or more and/or aircraft destroyed Fatality or permanent total disability
B $200,000 or more but less than $1M Permanent partial disability or three or more persons hospitalized as inpatients
C $20,000 or more but less than $200K Nonfatal injury resulting in loss of time from work beyond day/shift when injury occurred

Only Class A, B and C mishaps are included in the data presented on this site. All Class A, B and C ground mishaps are required to be reported by the Marine Corps, however, not all Class C Navy afloat/shore mishaps and Navy/Marine aviation mishaps are reportable.

For most afloat/shore mishaps reportable due to injuries, the Navy requires a minimum of five lost workdays before requiring a report. The same standards are used for Navy and Marine aviation mishaps.

Note: The term "Marine military personnel" as used in the statistics pages includes Navy military personnel attached to Marine units (e.g. corpsmen).
