HCS-4 Deploys in Support of OIF
Story Number: NNS040415-04
Release Date: 4/15/2004 9:59:00 AM

By Lt. Cmdr. J. A. Garrow, Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron 4 Public Affairs

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron (HCS) 4, a Naval Reserve Squadron from Norfolk, Va., has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Under the command of Cmdr. David G. Tyler, HCS-4 relieved its west coast sister squadron, HCS-5, March 5.

HCS 4's squadron of pilots, air crewmen, aircraft maintainers, medical specialists, intelligence and administrative support personnel are experts in special warfare support, and combat search and rescue.

This mobilization marks the second time in less than one year that HCS-4 has been called to support the global war on terrorism. In March 2003, the squadron was mobilized in support of Operations Noble Eagle and Iraqi Freedom, and assigned to U.S. 6th Fleet. Two HCS-4 detachments spent more than three months in the Mediterranean Sea on multiple ships and ashore. The squadron mobilized again in early February and deployed Det. 1 to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of operations in support of CENTCOM’s Joint Special Operations Air Command.

Det. 1 operates four HH-60H Seahawk helicopters in support of Army, Navy, Air Force and coalition forces' Special Operations Units' air requirements. The unique aircraft survivability and mission equipment installed in the helicopter enables pilots and air crewmen to operate effectively in a high-threat night environment.
