Important Information on
Visa Appointments and Processing

Visa Appointments:

High demand for visas during peak travel times and the need to take additional steps to ensure the safety of the traveling public is likely to result in periodic increases in the wait time for visa appointments. The information below is updated on a weekly basis.

  • Average length of time to obtain an interview appointment for a visitor (B1/B2) visa: click here.

  • Average length of time to obtain an interview appointment for a student (F, M) or exchange visitor (J) visa: click here.

(see below for emergency appointment procedures for students who must report to school within the next two weeks).

  • Average length of time to obtain an interview appointment for all other categories of nonimmigrant visas: click here.

You may also click here to find out which days have appointments available for your visa class.

All appointments for visa interviews at the Embassy's consular section are made via the Internet atwww.ttsvisas.com.

Visa Processing:

Visas are returned to applicants via TTS, which will collect a four hundred rupee fee as applicants enter the consular waiting room. The average amount of time it takes to process a visa and return it to the applicant following an interview, after a determination by the consular officer that the visa will be issued is three days. Some applications, however, may require additional processing that could delay visa issuance for an extended period of time. The applicant will be notified if this is true in their case.

U.S. consular sections in New Delhi started accepting non-immigrant visa applications from applicants residing in the Chennai and Mumbai consular districts on March 22. Interested applicants must schedule their appointments through the website www.ttsvisas.com.

Applications from southern India will only be accepted from applicants who will apply in person, speak English fluently, have not previously been refused a visa for any reason, and can demonstrate need to travel before an appointment is available at the US Consulate General serving their place of residence.

New Delhi cannot accept e-mail or phone requests for earlier appointments from persons in Mumbai or Chennai.

All U.S. consular sections in India are working to ensure that appointment wait times are kept to a minimum. Persons anticipating traveling to the United States this summer are encouraged to apply early.

The consular section in New Delhi has set aside a small number of appointment slots for emergency applications involving humanitarian or medical emergencies, student's whose Form I-20 shows that they must report to school within the next two weeks and certain unforeseen business related emergencies. If you have a genuine emergency need to travel to the US you may inquire at 91 11 2355 4631 or 91 11 5154 0016. We regret we cannot make emergency appointments for weddings, graduations, to begin temporary employment in the United States or other foreseeable events.

What is a Non-immigrant Visa?

A nonimmigrant visa is most frequently a tourist, business, student, or specialty worker visa that will permit the applicant to stay for a particular period of time in the United States to accomplish a specific purpose, such as visiting, studying, or working in a specialty job.

Visa Validity
A visa's validity is the period during which the traveler may use the visas to apply for admission to the U.S. It does not indicate the length of time the visitor may stay. An officer of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) authorizes the traveler's admission to the United States and determines the period of authorized stay.

Applicants should be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry to the United States. At the port of entry, an inspector may deny admission to the holder of a valid visa if the traveler's activities do not appear to be compatible with the specified visa category.
