Assistant Secretary Beth Jones Meets with Georgian Government

Tbilisi - Assistant Secretary Beth Jones visited Tbilisi on Friday,
July 30th, as part of her visit to Europe with Secretary of State
Colin Powell. Assistant Secretary Jones, who heads the European
and Eurasian Bureau for the U.S. State Department, met with President
Saakashvili, Parliamentary Speaker Burjanadze, and other Georgian
government leaders to discuss the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and
South Ossetia.
While in Georgia, Assistant Secretary Jones toured the BTC pipeline
route, met with U.S. Embassy officials, and Georgian government
officials. After her one-day visit, Assistant Secretary Jones departed
Tbilisi for Warsaw, where she will rejoin Secretary of State Powell
for meetings.
Elizabeth Jones was sworn in as Assistant Secretary for European
and Eurasian Affairs on May 31, 2001. She joined the Foreign Service
in 1970. Her overseas assignments -- concentrated in the Middle
East, South Asia and Germany -- included Kabul, Islamabad, New Delhi,
Baghdad, Amman, Cairo, Beirut, Tunis, West Berlin and Bonn. She
served as Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan. In Washington,
she was the Lebanon Desk Officer, Deputy Director for Lebanon, Jordan,
Syria and Iraq, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the
Near East Bureau. She also served as Executive Assistant to Secretary
Warren Christopher and directed the Office of Caspian Basin Energy
Diplomacy.
