The Socorro Soil and Water Conservation District's cedar control project is ready to treat more than 2,000 acres of salt cedar, an invasive that special projects director Nyleen Troxel Stowe, calls a "water guzzler" that's keeping much-needed water out of the Rio Grande.


From Pit to Pool: Rhode Island WHIP Project to Return Gravel Pit to Nature
More than $51,000 in Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program funds will help turn a 50-acre gravel pit on the Eight Rod Farm into grassland and pools, which should welcome birds, frogs and assorted wildlife. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide funding to the state to improve habitats," says State Con Judy Doerner.

As a result of some additional Congressional funding, the NRCS Hoolehua Plant Materials Center (PMC) has been able to better assist the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission in their native plant re-vegetation efforts.

NRCS Provides $500,000 for Wildfire Recovery Efforts in Alaska
Secretary Veneman announced that NRCS is providing $500,000 to help wildfire recovery efforts in Alaska that are impacting many rural communities and Alaska Native villages. The funds will provide assistance to help heal the watershed and protect the threatened water resources of Alaska Native villages.

Double Honors for Indiana Earth Team Volunteers

Shaded Relief Map from USGS Digital Elevation Model New Digital Soil Survey Mapping Course Announced
A new course, Digital Soil Survey Mapping and Updating will provide training for use in onscreen soil survey mapping and editing using GIS software. It will focus on enabling soil survey project offices to efficiently produce quality State Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) products.
