The Department of Defense completed today its nearly three-year investigation of operational tests conducted in the 1960s. These tests were known to some as "Project SHAD," which was in fact a subset of "Project 112." Project 112 tests were conducted under the auspices of the Deseret Test Center, at Fort Douglas, Utah. The Deseret Test Center test known as "High Low" was among the most recent fact sheets released in October 2002. May 23, 2002 - DoD releases Project SHAD fact sheets
The Department of Defense today released detailed fact sheets on six Cold War-era chemical and biological warfare tests. Release of the information is part of an on-going effort to provide information needed by the Department of Veterans Affairs to respond to some veterans' claims that tests conducted in the 1960s affected their health. A DoD investigative team found that simulants were used in lieu of chemical and biological warfare agents in many of these tests, but a number did involve the use of actual chemical and biological warfare agents.

January 4, 2002 - DoD Releases Information on 1960 tests
In the 1960s, the Department of Defense conducted a series of chemical and biological warfare vulnerability tests on naval ships known collectively as Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense. Over the past 10 years, some individual veterans expressed concern to the Department of Veterans Affairs that their participation in these tests may have exposed them to harmful substances.

January 4, 2002 - No Small Feat
The ongoing investigation into the Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense, or SHAD, tests is a detective story worthy of Sherlock Holmes. Finding the historical records of these tests is complicated by the fact that in the 1960s, joint operations were not so common. The U.S. Army planned the SHAD tests, but only a few Army boats were involved. For the most part the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps conducted the tests with assistance from the Air Force.
