Acting Under Secretary Gilbert G. Gonzales Announces Over $23 Million Invested in Rural Maine Acting Under Secretary of USDA Rural Development Gilbert G. Gonzalez has publicly announced over $23 million in funding to benefit Maine’s rural residents. Funding recipient organizations from across the state were on hand to hear the announcement, which took place at the Sable Oaks Marriott in Portland on September 8. (See attached list of funding recipients) "The Bush Administration is committed to the future of rural communities. By investing in housing, community facilities, and businesses, more rural Maine citizens will be able to live in decent, safe, and affordable housing, access essential facilities, and start or expand businesses that will create jobs for their community," said Gonzalez. "These funds are critical to increasing economic opportunity and improving the quality of life for many residents in rural Maine.” Rural Development State Director Michael W. Aube commented on the announcement, saying, “Rural Development’s support of rural communities is evident through the various recipients of today’s funding announcement. It is rewarding to see the smiles of local leaders as they welcome the investment that will bring jobs and more opportunities for improving the quality of life of Maine people." The agency strives for excellence in its ongoing commitment to Maine’s rural communities.” Rural Development has invested over $104 million to date in fiscal year 2004 in rural Maine through its Community, Housing, and Business programs.
