The 2004 RUS CPA Seminars have come to an end, and what
an ending it was. Over the course of six weeks in August and September,
RUS played host to a combined total of 624 people, a new record,
in three locations. Those 624 in attendance represented 150 different
accounting firms, 100 electric companies and 53 telecommunications
companies, along with representatives from the American Institute
of Certified Public Accountants, the Financial Accounting Standards
Board, the National Exchange Carrier Association, the National Rural
Electric Cooperative Association, a state auditor, and 3 Federal
agencies along with a handful of consultants. Add in the fact that
one seminar took place less than 24 hours after the host city had
been hit by tropical storm Gaston, with fewer than 10% of registrants
canceling at that location.
This year's program included the usual program and accounting
updates from the FASB, FERC and RUS along with an excellent session
on SAS No. 99, Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement
Audit, presented by one of the original authors of SAS No. 99;
a thorough discussion of SFAS No. 150, Accounting for Certain
Financial Instruments with Characteristics of both Liabilities
and Equity, as it pertains to both electric and telecommunications
cooperatives; an insider's look at Internal Control; an informative
and entertaining update on Government Audit Standards; our normal
top-notch session on income tax issues affecting RUS borrowers;
and a thought provoking presentation on the changing demographic
of Rural America.
As we compile a list of suggested cities for 2006 and pack this
year's files away, we want to say thanks to all registrants and
speakers for making this a great seminar.
