FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: HHS To Award More Than $4 Million To Improve
the Capacity The Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families today announced that about $4.2 million will be made available to help faith and community-based organizations increase their capacity to assist people in need. The resources will come from the Compassion Capital Fund (CCF), a $35 million Presidential initiative aimed at helping these organizations garner more resources and use them effectively. “Faith-based and community-based organizations have great power to help Americans with a variety of problems,” Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. “These grant funds will help expand the capacity of these groups to obtain needed resources and manage them appropriately on behalf of their clients.” Grants will be made to intermediary organizations that will provide technical assistance to faith and community-based groups. Funds will go only to organizations that have demonstrated expertise in working with and providing such assistance to a wide range of these groups. Private, non-profit organizations including faith and community-based organizations, and state, local, and tribal governments are eligible to apply for these grants. “People in crisis are best served by organizations that can understand and respond to their needs," said Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., assistant secretary for children and families. “We are pleased to offer this opportunity to bolster the ability of faith- and community-based organizations to deliver services.” Applications for these grants are due by July 28, 2003.
