Asian American Health Web Site
The Asian American Health web site, second of the series of special population web sites, was created to
address the health information needs of Asian Americans, the fastest growing minority population in the United States
(currently over 12 million). The site features links to consumer health information specific to Asian Americans, including
some in Chinese and other Asian languages. |

Tox Town
NLM's Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS) launched a new web site, Tox Town,
on October 7, 2002. Tox Town looks at an ordinary town and points out environmental hazards that may be in that town.
Chemicals, Jobs and Diseases
Haz-Map® (Copyright© 2000-2002) is one of the latest additions to NLM's
Specialized Information Services group of information products. It is an occupational toxicology database designed to link jobs to
hazardous job tasks that may be associated with occupational diseases and their symptoms.
Haz-Map® can be found at http://hazmap.nlm.nih.gov.

EPA's TRI99 joins TOXNET
TOXLINE Restructuring
- There is now a toxicology subset limit in PubMed.
- BIOSIS and IPA have not been updated in either the TOXNET or IGM/ELHILL versions of TOXLINE since December 2000. NLM has decided
to no longer continue licensing the information from these databases due to a combination of cost and a fair amount of duplication
between what they provide and what we already have in MEDLINE.
- The pre-2001 BIOSIS and IPA records will remain in TOXNET TOXLINE's
collection of historic data.
- Some original TOXLINE subfiles are being updated in the new TOXNET TOXLINE file. These include the NTIS-derived toxicology-related technical reports, the research project reports from FEDRIP and CRISP, and the TSCATS submissions to EPA.
- The small special collections
RISKLINE (Swedish National Chemicals Inspectorate) and CIS (International Labour Office) are also being updated in the TOXNET system.
- Although the early iterations of NLM's Gateway do not search TOXNET, we expect a not too distant future version will do just that,
including "TOXLINE Special" (if that's the name we settle on). At that point, a search of the Gateway will, in effect,
reconstitute the model of our old TOXLINE, by searching for toxicology across the board, and even including things like books via
LocatorPlus and consumer health information via MedlinePlus.
- An article about TOXLINE changes by Jeanne Goshorn, the TOXLINE file manager, appeared in the February 1, 2001 issue of
the NLM Technical Bulletin.

The National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce online access to the abstracts from the
XIII International AIDS Conference held July 2000 in Durban, South Africa. The easy-to-use

to author e-mail addresses.

On Thursday May 25th, the Specialized Information Services web site will change format to a new
lighter loading page. The content and layout of our site will remain the same, but users with slower Internet connections should
notice a marked improvement in the speed at which the pages download. Many page names will change and your bookmarks may no
longer be valid. However, you will find pointers to the new equivalent pages. |
September, 1999 |
On September 22, 1999, a new version of TOXNET'S search interface on the Web was released.
Access to TOXLINE and ChemIDplus is included in this new interface, and many new and different searching features are evident.
Initially, a “basic” mode of searching will be allowed, with “custom” modes allowing for greater
precision in searching and display. Special options such as cross-file searching will gradually be introduced in the months
to follow. The Web address (http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov) will remain, and initially the new interface will be a choice you can
make at that site. The new address is http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/.
Remember, on September 30, 1999, access to the command line/menu interface on TOXNET will end. After that date, the only
public access to the toxicology databases at NLM will be through the Web interfaces. |

Release of Institute of Medicine's Report on Internet Access to NLM's Tox Files. The
Institute of Medicine has recently released a report assessing the usefulness and effectiveness of the TOXNET Web Site.
The report is published by the National Academy Press and entitled "Internet Access to the National Library of
Medicine's Toxicology and Environmental Health Databases". For ordering information

All billed access to NLM databases on the ELHILL and TOXNET system will stop on September 30, 1999. Automatic
SDIs and other ELHILL functions will also cease because billed user ID codes will no longer function. The NLM online
registration will be discontinued May 1; NLM will no longer issue billed codes. For more information, read the NLM Technical
Bulletin article. |
