The MMS’s Environmental Studies Program defines information needs and implements studies designed to predict the effects of oil and gas exploration and development on the human, marine, and coastal environments. Information from studies on environmental, social, and economic concerns is used in making decisions about selection of areas for leasing, environmental assessment, mitigation, and monitoring.
