WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) supplied a 16-ton granite marker that was officially dedicated today to honor 184 people killed Sept. 11, 2001 during a terrorist attack at the Pentagon.

 “This group marker will stand for all time as a tribute to the lives of these brave men and women and as a reminder to future generations that freedom comes at a high cost,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.

The light gray marker was installed at Arlington National Cemetery on a hillside overlooking the Pentagon.  It is in the southeastern corner of the cemetery, in Section 64.

The five-sided marker bears the names of the 184 people who died at the Pentagon and aboard American Airlines Flight 77.  “Victims of Terrorist Attack On The Pentagon, September 11, 2001” is inscribed above the names.

Also happening today at Arlington was the interment of a single casket containing remains from many of the victims of the attack at the Pentagon, including those of five people whose remains could not be identified.  Remains from the hijackers were not included.

 “The Department of Veterans Affairs is honored to provide headstones and markers for these heroes, just as we have done for those who have died in every war America has ever fought,” Principi said.
