Change of Principal Investigator (PI)

The purpose of this task is to allow the Sponsoring Research Organization (SRO) the ability to request a change of PI for an existing award.

If the Principal Investigator (PI) initiates the change of PI, the following tasks must be completed by the SRO Representative as noted.

Sponsoring Research Organization (SRO)

• Login to FastLane as SRO
• Access "Change of PI" Screen
• View/Edit the "Change of PI" Screen
• Forward Change of PI Request to NSF

Logging into FastLane - SRO Representative

To Login as an SRO Representative, open the "FastLane Home Page ":

• In the browser's Address/Location/URL field type http://www.fastlane.nsf.gov and press the Enter key. The "FastLane Home Page" screen displays (Figure 1).
• NOTE: The site may now be added to the browser "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" list.

• Click on the Research Administration option from the menu at the left of the Home Page. The "Research Administration Login" screen appears (Figure 2).

• Complete the following fields (NOTE: REQUIRED fields are shown in bold):

  Last Name	Type your last name.
  SSN	Type your Social Security Number.
  Password	Type your password.
  Research Administration Functions	Select the radio button.

  
  

• Click on the Login button. The "Research Administration Functions Menu" screen appears (Figure 3).

Accessing the "Change of PI Request" Screen

Open the Notifications and Requests Screen

To open the "Notifications and Requests" screen...

• On the "Research Administration Functions Menu" screen, click on the GO button for the Administer Notifications To or Requests for NSF Approvals Under Grants option. The "Notifications and Requests" screen appears (Figure 4).

Open List of Forwarded Notifications/Requests

To open the "List of Forward Notifications/Requests".

• On the "Notifications and Requests" screen click on the Review/Submit button. The "List of Forwarded Notifications/Requests" screen appears (Figure 5).

• In the list of notifications, click on the appropriate Change of PI Request
• Click on the Prepare Request button. The "Change of PI Request" screen for the selected request appears (Figure 6).

You may now View/Edit the Change of PI Request Form.

View/Edit the "Change of PI Request" Form

To View/Edit the "Change of PI Request" Form:

• Verify/Edit the following fields (NOTE: REQUIRED fields are shown in bold):
  
  

  Field Name	Action
  Proposed PI SSN	Type the Social Security Number of the new PI. Click on the "Check PI" button to verify the new PI SSN. If correct, the name appears.
  Effective Date	Type the effective date in mm/dd/yyyy format.
  Justification for Request	Type the reason for the Change of PI request.
  Biographical Sketch File Location	Type in the name and location of the file on the screen.   If you do not know the location of the file, click on the "Browse..." button. The "File Upload" window appears. Click on the file to be uploaded to select it and click on the "Open" button. The screen re-appears with the filename and path. Click on the "Upload File" button. The "PDF Conversion/Compliance Check" screen appears. When the upload is completed, the "File Successfully Converted/Checked" screen appears.Click on the "Proofread PDF" button. A new window appears with the converted PDF document. After reviewing this document for accuracy, close this window. The "Proofreading Complete" screen appears. If this PDF document is not correct, click on the "Cancel" button. If this PDF document is correct, click on the "Accept" button. The re-appears with two new buttons.

Save, Delete, Reject, Cancel, or Forward Change of PI Request

At the bottom of the "Change of PI Request" screen are the Save, Delete, Reject, Sign and Submit (Forward), and Cancel buttons.

• On the "Change of PI Request" screen, click on the Save button to save the change of PI request. The "Save Change of PI Request - Verification" screen appears (Figure 7).

• Click on the Go Back to Notifications and Requests button to return to the "Notifications and Requests" screen.

• On the "Change of PI Request" screen, click on the Delete button to delete the change of PI request. A "Confirmation" dialog box appears (Figure 8).

• Click on the OK button to confirm the delete request. A "Verification" screen appears (Figure 9).

• Click on the Go Back to Notifications and Requests button to return to the "Notifications and Requests" screen.

• On the "Change of PI Request" screen, click on the Reject button to reject and return the change of PI request to the PI. A "Verification" screen appears (Figure 10).

• Click on the Go Back to Notifications and Requests button to return to the "Notifications and Requests" screen.

To forward the Change of PI Request to NSF, the SRO Representative must Sign and Submit the request.

• On the "Change of PI Request" screen, click on the Sign and Submit button to approve the change. The "Forward Change of PI Request - Verification" screen appears (Figure 11).

• Click on the Go Back to Notifications and Requests button to return to the "Notifications and Requests" screen.

• On the "Change of PI Request" screen, click on the Cancel button to cancel change of PI request. The "Cancel Change of PI Request - Verification" screen appears (Figure 12).

• Click on the Go Back to Notifications and Requests button to return to the "Notifications and Requests" screen.
