Hydrographic surveys are used to compile the official nautical charts for the United States and its territories. Although the primary use for these surveys is chart compilation, they are also available to the general public. These detailed hydrographic surveys are available by contacting:

The National Ocean Service's (NOS) Hydrographic Manual, Fourth Edition (1976) contains specifications and procedures for hydrographic surveying and includes updates through Change Number 3 (June 1981). This manual is no longer in print, however it and older versions of the Hydrographic Manual can be downloaded from the Hydrographic Society of America website at: http://www.thsoa.org/references.htm
The "NOS Hydrographic Surveys Specifications and Deliverables" was updated in 2003 and focuses on the minimal criteria needed for both in-house and contract NOS surveys.
