About FSIS
Office of Public Health Science
OPHS provides expert scientific analysis, advice, data, and recommendations on all matters involving public health and science that are of concern to FSIS.

The purpose of the Committee is to provide impartial, scientific advice to Federal food safety agencies for use in the development of an integrated national food safety systems approach from farm to final consumption to assure the safety of domestic, imported, and exported foods.
Nominations Sought For Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (Oct 22, 2004)
Nominations are being sought for scientists with expertise in epidemiology, food technology, microbiology, risk assessment, infectious diseases and biostatistics and other related sciences.

FSIS has conducted regulatory microbiological testing programs on selected meat, poultry, and egg products since 1983. This data relates to ready-to-eat products and the prevalence of Salmonella and Listeria.
Management Support Staff
This staff provides all management, administrative and budget support for OPHS, programmatic oversight in areas of laboratory programs, special projects, training, and continuous improvement impacting the Agency. It provides management and financial oversight for the Accredited Laboratory Program.

Zoonotic Diseases & Residue Surveillance Division
This Division monitors and evaluates public health hazards (chemical, physical and microbial) associated with animal populations. The group provides leadership in identifying food safety concerns associated with animal production, transportation, marketing, and the pre-slaughter preparation of livestock and poultry.

Microbiology Division
The Microbiology Division provides scientific support for hazard analysis and advances the application of new technologies and approaches to detect, prevent, and control foodborne diseases. Areas of responsibility include the design and coordination of microbiological baseline studies, foreign equivalency reviews, training, in-plant auditing, and regulation review.

Human Health Sciences Division
HHSD provides scientific leadership in the application of risk assessment, management and communication principles to safeguarding public health. The Division coordinates activities of Public Health and Epidemiology Liaison officers, who provide on-site assistance to state and local public health officials in the investigation of foodborne diseases.

Risk Assessment Division
The Risk Assessment Division works through OPHS' CDC liaison with FoodNet to collect data and information regarding foodborne illness and pathogens and analyzes such information to assess the use and efficacy of food safety prevention measures in animal and human populations. These results are published as Risk Assessments.

Field Services Laboratories
Scientific testing aids in the detection and prevention of foodborne illness outbreaks. To support FSIS' farm-to-table food safety strategies, three field laboratories conduct scientific tests in the disciplines of chemistry, microbiology, and pathology.

Laboratory Sample & Data Management Staff
This Staff develops, operates, and maintains modern scientific information systems and reports from data systems for FSIS.

Laboratory QA/QC Division
This Division administers chemistry, microbiology, and veterinary pathology quality assurance and quality control functions for the Field Service Laboratories and the Microbial Outbreaks and Special Projects Branch.
