About
the Board of Scientific Counselors |
Through
the broad and diverse expertise represented by its membership, the
Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) adds an essential dimension
to the CDC and National Center for Infectious Disease (NCID) goal
of preventing and controlling infectious disease threats in the
United States and worldwide. The board’s 21 voting members
are among our country’s most elite public health leaders from
academia, private industry, private practice, medical and public
health associations, the general public, as well as local, state,
and other federal agencies. The board is further enhanced by the
(non-voting) participation of liaison representatives from Canada
and Mexico. Members are invited to serve for two, three, or four-year
terms, which overlap to lend continuity to the organization. Typically,
the board meets in public session twice a year.
The Board’s
advice is consistently valuable to the NCID Director, NCID scientists,
and program managers. The Board has contributed markedly to NCID’s
success in:
- improving
emergency response capacities
- enhancing
preparedness against emerging and re-emerging diseases and related
threats
- strengthening
an expanding network of state and local health departments
- innovating
approaches for improved detection and control of infectious diseases
- implementing
science-based programs to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
- supporting
research to identify, characterize, and combat emerging infectious
disease threats.
During the next
two years the Board will focus on refining the nation’s century-old
public health system to better address the emergence of new infectious
disease threats, both natural and intentional. CDC and NCID will
continue to consult the Board in the development of strategic plans
to meet contemporary public health challenges. Specifically, advice
from the Board will add substantial value to CDC’s new Strategic
Direction Initiative, titled "Creating the Future of CDC for
the 21st Century.” Input from both internal and external partners,
including the Board, will be fundamental to the success of this
initiative.
