Mission

As part of the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory at NIST the Surface and Microanalysis Science Division serves as the Nation’s Reference Laboratory for chemical metrology research, standards, and data to:

Characterize the spatial and temporal distribution of chemical species; and improve the accuracy, precision, sensitivity, selectivity, and applicability of surface, microanalysis, and advanced isotope measurement techniques.

Vision

To be the premier national resource for measurement standards and science in the chemical structure, composition and reactivity of surfaces, interfaces, gases and particulate matter required to ensure U.S. Industrial competitiveness in the world market.

Goals

Measurement Standards

Establish the Surface and Microanalysis Science Division as the pinnacle of the national traceability and international comparability structure for measurements, data, and predictive models on the composition of surfaces, interfaces, atmospheric gases, and particulate matter, and provide the fundamental basis of the nation’s measurement system in these areas.

Chemical and Process Information

Assure that U.S. industry has access to accurate and reliable data and predictive models to determine the chemical and physical properties of materials and processes on the nanoscale.

Measurement Science

Anticipate and address the current and next generation measurement needs of the nation, by performing cutting-edge research in surface chemistry, analytical microscopy, microanalysis, and atmospheric chemistry.
